Whitening Toothpaste and Teeth Damage
American Dental Association says the whitening toothpastes have relatively gentle abrasives for lifting minor stains and do not do as much damage to enamel or gums. Many dentists however report a rise in cases of tooth decay in patients who use whitening pastes.
So if you use whitening toothpastes and start having some sensitivity (hot/cold foods) etc. Check with your dentist on his opinion. Most dentists recommend brushing with a whitening toothpaste in the morning and a remineralizing toothpaste at night. Here is the science behind this for all you fact buffs.

Examples of remineralizing toothpaste include:
1.. Enamelon - "Enamelon, Inc.was founded in 1992, and developed a toothpaste that helps remineralize tooth enamel and, thus, hardening the tooth. This aids in decreasing cavities. It works by using soluble calcium, phosphate and fluoride. According to their research, this toothpaste stops cavities before they can form. It also reverses early stages of tooth decay. Studies have been performed at SUNY, Stony Brook to evaluate if it also decreases dentinal tooth sensitivity. What was concluded was that enamelon did in fact decrease tooth sensitivity. Many other studies have been performed with positive results." You can no longer find enamelon as there was no consumer interest and it went bankrupt. However......A&H has the same product. 2. The Arm&Hammer product is called ENAMEL CARE and I have been using it for nearly a year. It cost about nearly $4 for a medium size tube, pricey but worth it. I have only one cavity which I had as a 24 year old. I have since switched to this toothpaste and notice a difference. There are 3 versions: Natural whitening (can be used in the morning), Advance cleaning, Breath Defense (either can be used for this at night).
3. Trident markets a chewing gum, Trident Advantage, which offers the same sort of tooth protection.
